Customers We Love
I work in a place that has some of the best customers you could ever ask for. You know the ones; at any given time they can make your job easier, less stressful, or just plain fun. While we’re happy to serve most of our customers, there are some who just deserve a little bit of recognition.…

The Cowboy Christmas Party
Christmas parties are a drag. In my experience, a Christmas party is two or three hours trapped at a table trying to make polite conversation with people I avoid at work . I've attended parties where my fervent wish was to choke on a chicken bone so EMS could rescue me from the misery of forced cheer.
I viewed the Cowboy…

Staff Matters
So many of us in the Food & Beverage industry have talked within and amongst ourselves for years if not decades about the reasons and excuses for the endless turnover rate in FOH positions, now to the tune of hundreds of thousands annually throughout all positions in the hospitality business.…

Is that YOUR Garbage?
I work in fast food, and I have a story that is about the best thing I have EVER seen!
It was a statutory holiday so it was very slow in the restaurant. A group of us was huddled in the drive thru chatting, so we had a great view through the window as the events unfolded.…

A Day from Hell
It was a day like any other day in sunny Florida, Only instead of floating in my pool with a beer in one hand, a ciggy in the other and an inch of lotion on my body, I was off to work to wait on the tourists. Now I have waited on people in New York, N.Y. City, and Connecticut, but never have I waited on such rude, grumpy, smelly, mean, nasty, simply ugly people than the vacationers near…

So you think you can wait tables?
Hey everybody, Happy New Year!, Well it seems that I am starting this year with a bang and hopefully you will have the best year ever and all your dreams come true! If you follow my blog, by now you know that I wait tables for a living. According to my coworkers, I am what you call a "Career Waitress", which is code for " I didn't go to college, I like having cash on me at all times and now this is the only…

More Than Just A Pretty Face
So much more than a pretty face.
I sometimes come across people who are under the impression that a restaurant hostess is basically nothing other than the pretty face that greets customers with a scripted, somewhat…

Dorothy
For those of you who are unfamiliar with me, I'm DriveThruGuy and I run a blog called Life In The Drive Thru where I share stories about my daily trials in the drive thru. There are a couple of things you should know about that last sentence...
1. run a blog…

Dear Guests: I love you, but please get some new material!
I am a reasonable human being who has accepted that there are certain vagaries of this business that one must sooner or later learn to live with if he is to avoid being driven certifiably insane. Obvious examples would be the occasional idiot who undertips, the elderly four-top who just can't get enough of that delicious bread, and small children who enjoy the hell out of dropping silverware on the floor (my limit…

Yes, it's busy...it's Friday night!
So it's Friday night and our restaurant is fortunately busy as usual. The dining room and bar tables are usually filled by 5:30 pm and from that point untill about 9:30 we're on a wait. We have a lot of regular customers who come in, know they're going to have to wait and happily get a cocktail at the bar or sit in the waiting area while I put their name on the wait list. It would be amazing (although not…

Tipping is the Key(s)
I used to serve the lunch shift at a restaurant right across the street from a hospital. We offered the hospital employees 20% off so needless to say many of them would come in to eat. The problem is that a lot of times the people who take advantage of these types of discounts are not the ideal customers to serve, and this was no exception.…

You Can't Teach Common Sense!
I always say that I will write a book on all the funny moments I have experienced with customers...and I'm not talking about their funny or not so funny jokes, or their outfits, or the stupid things I have done in front of them. I am talking about the daily moments when I realize that not everyone has had to experience reality. Let's start today with a few examples:…

TheRealBarman Goes Fine Dining
I have always wondered if being raised under different circumstances would have shaped me into something more refined. You know, oil paintings and Persian rugs and a closet brimming with velvet? But then I remember that I…

Dessert Can Be Dangerous
Do you know
what Bananas Foster is? Although it sounds like the name of someone who works at Chuck E. Cheese during the day and then pole dances at night for nickels, it is actually a very…

WANT SOME DISCRIMINATION SERVED WITH THAT?
Hi it’s Ivonne again, ranting about restaurant life and the many facets of this necessary but often ignored thing called serving tables. Now when I started this job in the US, I became aware of the way people of color, mainly African American and Latinos; are viewed and treated in the restaurant industry.
